Faster, greener heavy-duty gas turbine connected to power grid

The 200 MW Fengyuan heavy-duty gas turbine was recently put into operation in Zaozhuang city in East China’s Shandong province and has been successfully connected to the local power grid.

Jointly developed by the China National Petroleum Corp and the Shandong Fengyuan Group, the gas turbine is the first 9E heavy-duty gas turbine utilized in Shandong’s energy sector, as well as one of the two heavy-duty gas turbines currently in service in the province.

Endowed with a maximum output of 200 MW, the gas turbine takes only 30 minutes from ignition to power generation, which is about four hours faster than traditional coal-fired power plants.

According to the developers, the project utilizes imported H100 units, the first of its kind in China, which could achieve continuous, efficient and stable power generation even at 110 percent rated power.

The project is expected to generate 2 billion kWh of electricity annually, provide heating to an area of 4 million square meters, and produce 220 tons of steam per hour.

Moreover, the gas turbine’s carbon dioxide emissions and nitrogen oxide emissions are about 42 percent and 20 percent of those of a coal-fired power plant, respectively. It also has almost zero sulfur dioxide emissions and produces no ash.

Aimed at giving sounder support to the gas turbine, the local power supplier has previously carried out renovation on five 220 kV transmission lines through measures such as replacing the current transformers and circuit protectors.
