Haiyang reaps harvest of technical advances

In recent years, a series of emerging industries such as clean energy and aerospace have experienced rapid growth in Haiyang, a county-level city in East China’s Shandong province, which has significantly advanced the city’s economic development.

Endowed with abundant sources of clean energy, Haiyang has built an innovation zone to effectively utilize nuclear, wind, solar and hydrogen energies, as well as to develop advanced energy storage technologies.

Against such a backdrop, the city’s total installed capacity of clean energy reached 5.03 million kilowatts last year, which accounted for 5.4 percent of Shandong’s total and generated more than 24 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity.

In addition, with the help of the local power supplier, three offshore wind power and aquavoltaics projects have been successfully completed in Haiyang and connected to the local power grid.

The State Grid’s Haiyang Power Supply Co said aquavoltaics refers to a dual-use approach that enables the coproduction of aquatic animals and solar electricity, and the city plans to carry out three more such projects next year.

With the new projects in place, the total installed capacity of clean energy in Haiyang is expected to surpass 30 million kilowatts by 2035 and generate nearly 200 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

Haiyang is also home to a spaceport named Oriental, which covers a total area of more than 34 sq km. So far, a data center, a rocket launch site and a science education base have been built there.

Meanwhile, efforts will be intensified to build an aerospace academy and a specialized hospital at the spaceport.

The power supply company said it has contributed to the construction of the spaceport by keeping up with the project’s progress and promptly responding to customer requirements.

The company also said it will continue to optimize customer services and ensure reliable power supply, thus fostering better conditions for local emerging industries to thrive.
