Beijing’s regional GDP was around 1.06 trillion yuan ($146 billion) for the first quarter, a 6 percent year-on-year growth when calculated at constant prices, according to the city’s statistics bureau at a press conference on Thursday.

Notably, this growth surpassed the previous year’s annual growth rate by 0.8 percentage points and exceeded the national first-quarter average level, which stands at 5.3 percent, according to Beijing Daily.

Breaking down the industries, the added value of the primary industry reached 1.5 billion yuan, marking a 3.2 percent growth year-on-year. Meanwhile, the secondary industry’s added value reached 131 billion yuan, growing 7.3 percent year-on-year.

Officials from the city’s statistics bureau said the city made solid progress in promoting high-quality development in the first quarter. Production demands continued to improve, employment and prices remained stable, and market expectations showed positive trends, contributing to an overall positive economic recovery and a promising start to the year.

On Wednesday, the Beijing municipal government’s top officials met to discuss the city’s economic performance in the first quarter. The meeting stressed the need to leverage investment’s driving role in economic growth, strengthen the scheduling of major projects, and develop emerging industries, including new energy vehicles and robots.
